What a way to preface the blockbuster card that is Saturday’s UFC 194 event.
TUF 22 was penciled in a day before UFC 194 in order to build some hype for the main event, with lightweights Frankie Edgar and Chad Mendes headlining the event. Coming off a late second round knockout at the hands of the polarizing Conor McGregor, Mendes had stated that he thought he deserved a rematch against the Irishman.
Mendes’ opponent, Frankie Edgar had similar feelings. Edgar is on record saying that he feels like he was “stepped over” by Conor McGregor for the title fight against Jose Aldo, and publicly challenged McGregor to fight. Friday night was the time for these two fighters to put their words to the test.
The bout started off slow, with both Edgar and Mendes evaluating each other and their ranges. In the first real exchange between the two fighters, however, it was the less powerful Frankie Edgar who clinched a crucial knockout 2:28 into the first round. The video can be seen below.
Mendes, now 30 years old, has lost three of his last four fights in the octagon, while his counterpart, the 34-year-old Frankie Edgar is on a five match winning streak, cementing his place as a top three contender in the Featherweight division.
Tune in Saturday night to see the highly anticipated Jose Aldo and Conor McGregor winner, as well as Frankie Edgar’s likely next opponent.
